Explanation Digital Resources - internet
Often you will find ASCII- or HTML-files. All
deviations are mentioned (shortened) at a link using the following
abbreviations:
- CSV: Comma-Separated Variables; a comma delimited file
dat can be imported in software like Excel
- DBF4: this file is prepared for databases in DbaseIV-format; you
can also read this file by using Excel, Access or any other program that can handle this
format
- DBF5: this file is prepared for databases in DbaseV-format; see
the remark at DBF4
- DJVU: this file can be looked at with DJVU, a
plug-in that you can download
for free
- DOC: this file is a Word-document
- GEDCOM: this is a Gedcom-file that can be
imported in many genealogy-programms
- MDB: this file is prepared for Access
- ODP: you can make use of these files with the help of the
genealogy-program Oedipus II (freeware!), for Windows; go to the page with more
information about Oedipus II and the possibility to download the program via this
link to Oedipus II
- PDF: this is a PDF-file, that you can read by
using the free downloadable

- WP51: this file is prepared for the textprocessor WordPerfect

- WPD: file made with WordPerfect, but also

- XLS: this file is prepared for the
spreadsheet-software Excel

ZIP: you will download this file to your
computer; on your computer you have to extract the file with help of the program
WinZip (download here WinZip)
or with PKUNZIP.EXE (download here PKUNZIP.EXE)

Further the following remarks can be found:
- INDEX: the file has an index, referring to locations in the file
- MORE: you can choose more than one file (this does not include
files which are split-up because of their extent)
- REGISTRATION : these data are available only
following registration, which bears the risk of dissemination of your personal
information to unknown third parties
- SEARCH:
you can search with help of a search-engine; you only can
see the results of your query; you can not take a look at all the data
- SEARCH+: you can search with help of a
search-engine as above, but you will search in a lot of resources at once
When no search-engine is available you have to search with help
of your browser or textprocessor; sometimes you will find the data in alphabetical order
so you can use this in your search
